Anjuna Touchdown: The Story Behind Hypnocoustics & Mandala’s Goa-Inspired Collaboration

March 4, 2026
Anjuna Touchdown, Hypnocoustics, mandala, nano records, psychedelic, psytrance

Few collaborations in psychedelic music carry the kind of organic chemistry that Hypnocoustics and DJ Mandala share. What began as a chance meeting in a beach café in Kerala more than two decades ago has grown into a creative partnership rooted in friendship, shared experiences, and a deep connection to the spirit of Goa.

Their latest collaboration, “Anjuna Touchdown,” captures a feeling familiar to many travellers and dancefloor wanderers – the moment of arrival, when the sun melts into the Arabian Sea and the music begins to shape a new chapter of life.

In this interview, Joe and Angus reflect on the serendipity that brought them together, their meticulous studio process, the ever-evolving magic of Goa, and the beautifully chaotic lessons learned along the roads of India.

As is clearly evident from the collaboration tracks you’ve written together, there’s a deep connection between you both. Can you take us back to the very first time you met and how that initial spark evolved into the creative partnership we hear today?

Joe & Angus: We met 20 years ago in Kerala in a beach café, both on our own journeys. Angus was bound for Goa to start an eco-resort which would later become The Mandala, while Joe was a fresh-faced early-20s aspiring psytrance producer travelling India for the first time.

It was a chance meeting, but we immediately connected. We ended up putting on a small party, hanging out for a week, exchanging music and creative ambitions before going our separate ways.

Ten years later we had another serendipitous meeting on a Goan beach, which eventually led to our first studio sessions together in 2016.

That original meeting, and the spark of connection and friendship at formative moments in both of our lives, sits behind our creative partnership. It allows us to tap into a part of our younger, idealistic selves and the sense of possibility we both felt at the time.

You’ve crafted several powerful collaborations over the years. How do you feel your shared creative process has evolved?

Joe & Angus: As our solo projects have refined and technology has advanced, the process has evolved to an extent, but our attitude towards writing music hasn’t changed.

We always work face-to-face, never remotely. We switch off from the outside world, discuss the vision of the track carefully, and dig deep into unusual sound sources that inspire us.

We also never rush for the sake of a deadline. For us, only time, reflection, revision and the ability to self-critique lead to the level of sophistication and detail necessary for a track to have real longevity.

Your latest collaboration release, “Anjuna Touchdown,” carries a very special energy. What does this track represent to you?

Angus: I’m a self-confessed sunset addict. Wherever I am in the world, that time of day means a lot to me, it represents a chance for self-reflection and marvelling at the wonders of nature.

Out of everywhere I’ve watched the sunset, some of my greatest memories are in Goa.

When I first came to Goa in the early 90s, I remember watching an epic touchdown sunset from the Shore Bar on South Anjuna beach, listening to what was then a completely new kind of music. Little did I know that sound would go on to define the course of my life.

As the orange ball melted into the sea, so did my mind. The rest is history. Anjuna Touchdown is really about that feeling of arrival.

You’ve both spent significant time in Goa. From your perspective, how have things transformed over the years, and what magical elements have remained untouched since your first adventure there?

Joe & Angus: Although Goa goes through many mutations, the land itself will always be the magical part, the energy of it is undeniable.

People come and go, but there’s always a core group who remain loyal. There’s still a special connection with the Goan people, and a steady flow of new visitors falling in love with the atmosphere and lifestyle for the first time.

As much as we might dream of crystallising a perfect moment in time, nothing stays the same. Today’s generation experiences the magic of Goa in ways that are just as meaningful and authentic as before.

India is well known for its gracefully organised chaos on the roads. Can you shed some light on the legendary “Horns OK Please” stickers seen on the back of most vehicles?

Angus: It roughly means: beep if you have to, then please feel free to overtake.

But like everything in India, there’s also an element of mystery to it.

I’ve always been fascinated by the beautiful chaos that seems to exist only in India. The question I often asked myself was, is this human chaos somehow cosmically organised?

At the time I was travelling around India on my Enfield motorbike. One day in Delhi, on a busy traveller street called Paharganj, I decided to run an experiment.

I started my bike at one end of the street and rode the hundred metres in first gear, moving at roughly the pace of a heartbeat. I promised myself I wouldn’t hesitate or use the horn at all.

The idea was that if I reached the other end of the street unscathed, without actively avoiding chickens, cows, rickshaws and the madness of Delhi traffic, then maybe chaos really does work.

I’m happy to report it was a successful experiment.

Somewhere in between all the apparent madness, there’s a nano-path of sense, the flow. It just requires trust to navigate. That idea has become a metaphor that has shaped me more than almost anything else.

For future psychedelic adventurers travelling to Goa, or India in general, what wisdom would you share?

Joe & Angus: Forget everything you think you know, because it’s probably irrelevant.

Be open-minded, respectful, appreciate the hospitality that so many Indians instinctively afford to their guests, and be willing to go with the flow at all times.

India is so much more than only the vortex of Goa in peak party season. It’s hard to describe without falling into cliche, but we see it as life unfiltered and a full spectrum reality that delights, enlightens and challenges in equal measure.

So be sure to explore deeper and step outside your comfort zone, and your intrepidness will be rewarded.

5 Minutes with Menog [Interview]

October 23, 2019
boom festival, menog, nano records, psytrance

Menog has completed his 5th studio album, Party Animal Farm, and it is his most mature offering to date.

The Portuguese maestro who boasts one of the best studios to date has found time between moving to a new house (and studio), getting married, starting a family and completing a full-length album of absolute blasters that will satisfy both night and daytime lovers of psychedelic trance.

We sat him down for five minutes to take a breather…

Where did you grow up (city/town)?

Coimbra [Portugal].

Favourite city visited so far…

Tokyo.

First festival you ever attended…

First trance festival was Boom Festival ’98.

Favourite food when at home?

At home, I love to cook all sorts of fish and lately I’ve been cooking a lot of Japanese Udon (veggie).

If I’m ordering from home, then either Indian or Sushi.

Do you have any pets?

We have 2 cats, 2 dogs and 2 horses…. (still wondering about the name of the album?) 😊

One album you grew up with that you still listen to today…

V Empire or Dark Fairy tales in Phallustein by Cradle of Filth.

An artist you wish you’d seen play live before they died.

Prince.

Favourite music genre outside of psytrance…

It was Metal/rock until a few years back, but lately electronic music in general.

Some of them don’t even have a genre I guess….

I  also love electronic fusion with classic music.

The track you are proudest of composing…

I  will go with Kikkarapyllyt from the new album…

Your go-to hardware or software synth in the studio…

Hardware I’ve been having lots of fun lately with Modular, Eurorack has been my hours of fun, software I will have to go with Serum.

Being on Nano records means…

Having a family that we get to work with and truly help you when needed.

Your latest full-length album, ‘Party Animal Farm’ dropped this week. First off, tell us about the album name…

Well, as I mentioned in one of the previous questions, we do have lots of animals, and we are animal lovers, and we do like to party too!

We just bought a house with land that looks like a small farm in the mountains. In fact, our wedding party was at the new house… and what a party it was…

So, after that, this name fitted perfectly on the album since I produced 80% of it there…

Which track was the toughest to complete?

My Remix from Tristan and Mandala, although at the same time I loved the challenge of making three people happy.

I have to say I love the result, so did they! and it really works well on the dance floor.

And which track surprised you the most when you first played it out to a dancefloor?

Drunk on Milk.

One sentence to describe the sound of MENOG in 2019…

I will have to quote from the Nano promo text from the album since its exactly what I feel ;

“Balance between uplifting and powerful to pounding and edgy, as much covering peak daytime moments as peak night-time moments, creating a pure example of perfect balance both energetically and sonically.”

5 Minutes with Avalon [Interview]

October 16, 2019
Avalon, Avalon Rise, nano records, psytrance, UK psytrance

It hardly gets any bigger than a brand-new album by one of Nano Records’ busiest artists, Avalon.

It’s been 10 years since his last full-length release and despite several singles, many collaborations, remixes as well as a Killerwatts album (with Tristan) and a Future Frequency album (with Sonic Species), RISE is what we’ve all been waiting for.

Favourite country to tour…

Not easy, in no particular Brazil, South Africa, Europe. Of course, I love lots more, too hard to call! I could name my worst, but that’s another question ha-ha.

Favourite food when traveling?

Asian food, now you mentioned it I got gyoza on my mind!

Favourite piece of clothing that you know you wear too often…

I love my Diesel leather biker jacket.

Most inspiring musical moment on tour…

My laptop and DAW!

Favourite musician/artists of all time?

Nirvana.

If you were not a music producer what do you think you’d be doing?

I was a record company A&R executive before this, so I guess I would have continued doing that. Hard to say, to be honest, this is my passion, my life, I cannot imagine doing anything else now.

Favourite movie…

Oooooh tough one, I’m a series guy. Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Games Of Thrones.

One track you’d love to remix (but know it could never happen)…

I don’t know I believe anything is possible 😉

One album you grew up listening to that you still listen to today…

Nirvana albums.

Strangest gig experience ever?

There has been so many, getting my trousers pulled down and dragged wrestled on to the floor whilst DJing by this crazy girl who would not take no for an answer!

You would have to hear the whole story, but it’s not one to write here that’s for sure!

When not touring or in the studio (which is not often) what do you do to relax?

I like to hang out in nature with friends, love good food, eating out. Travelling, seeing this beautiful world!

Being on Nano Bookings means…

You are in good hands!

Your new album RISE has just been released. It’s MASSIVE, congratulations. Does the album title have a significant meaning to you?

Thank you, Rise is my journey from the last 10 years to this moment, right now!

9 banging tracks; 5 of which are solo compositions. Anyone of them a personal favourite?

I would have to say my favourite is Another Dimension and Rise!

Which track from RISE has surprised you the most when playing out in your sets, in terms of crowd response?

The track with Dickster is a BLASTER, it’s a dark horse, it went from good to GREAT when I saw it being played out for the first few times.

The crowd response was insane! So funky, so psychedelic! Love it now more than ever!

How are you feeling now that RISE is out? Relief, excitement…what’s your overall sense of it all now?

Definitely relief and excitement.

A lot of emotions, it’s such a milestone in my life.

Years of work, my biggest journey musically yet! I put my heart and soul into the album!

Braincell

5 Minutes with Braincell [Interview]

June 19, 2019
braincell, nano records, psychedelic, psytrance

Ralph K. Freund aka Braincell has a long and illustrious psytrance career that dates back to his days as one half of the duo, RASTALIENS, which he formed with friend, Jay, back in 1994.

He launched his solo project as BRAINCELL in 2003 and boasts an impressive discography of releases on various compilations and major labels.

To date Ralph has played on every major continent and continues to smash out quality psychedelic music on a regular basis.

He has now teamed up with long-time friend, Angus Young aka Mandala, to form a new and truly exciting project. Their first EP, called Mission Possible, is fresh off the press and the result is a trippy combination of two seasoned NANO artists.

We sat Ralph down for a 5-minute chat…

Growing up in Germany was interesting because…

Braincell: In that area where I grew up there was no electronic scene at all, and it still sucked me in.

My favourite movies/book of all time is

Braincell: Into the wild

If I was a cartoon character I’d be…

Braincell: Snufkin from the Moomins 🙂

My weirdest gig experience ever was when…

Braincell: vvDavid Tingsgard (Battle of the Future Buddhas) and I woke up in a caravan with holes shot into it and we realised we had been put into an illegal hunting place to sleep.

So, we escaped from there by foot (dogs and hunters behind us), and managed to get a ride to the airport before it got worse 😉

Best gig I’ve ever played was…

Braincell: Ozora 2016 closing set (I still get goose bumps).

The first time I heard psytrance was…

Braincell: At a castle party in south Germany. I was expecting a rock show, but then they played that Bum Bum music (Monkey music as my friend called it) and I couldn’t escape it and haven’t been able to ever since.

Best way to keep occupied on flights and in airports is to…

Braincell: Produce [music].

Favourite psytrance track and/or artist of all time is…

Braincell: Technossomy – Pyramid

Completing a full album was…

Braincell: A big challenge as I had to transform all the ideas, inputs and recordings from a year of traveling into music, but also big fun and it opened up new ways of creativity [for me].

One other genre besides psytrance I would consider making…

Braincell: Rock music.

Being part of the NANO artist roster is…

Braincell: Fabulous (heaven on earth) and an extended family experience.

You’ve just released ‘Mission Possible’, the first track from your brand-new collaboration with Mandala. Tell us a bit about the new release and, of course, about your new production duo, with Angus.

Braincell: We aimed to create something different in the genre, combining natural and synthetic/modular sounds and then tweaking them into new territories.

I met Angus several years ago in Goa in his Mandala paradise and ever since then we’ve become very close friends… and I helped him a bit to push his own music career.

Also, every studio session we’ve had has been pure inspiration and we have a timeless flow together, so it was clear that we would do some music together somewhere in the future, and here we are. 🙂

5 Minutes with Laughing Buddha [Interview]

June 6, 2019
Laughing Buddha, nano records, psychedelic, psytrance

Laughing Buddha is something of an institution in psychedelic trance circles.

As one half of the Cosmosis duo that produced the seminal ‘Cosmology’ album on Transient Records and 20 years of releases on iconic labels such as Flying Rhino, T.I.P. Records, Dragonfly (as Drum Druids), it felt like a homecoming when “Jez “Buddha” joined the Nano Family.

He reckons his latest dancefloor banger, ‘Ultra Space,’ is his best work yet and so do we 🙂

Where did you grow up (city/town)?

I grew up in the sleepy suburbs of London… probably why I couldn’t wait to get out and explore the world!

Favourite city visited so far…

There are so many!

I love discovering the cultures and traditions (and food!) of all the different places around the world, whilst at the same time seeing that we all have so much in common, especially on the dance floor!!

First festival you ever attended

Wow, that’s going way back!

It must have been Glastonbury after my first trip to India selling chillums from a blanket on the grass 😀

Favourite food when at home?

I love making a traditional Italian risotto, because you can’t just throw it in the oven… you have to give it real love!

Do you have any pets?

I am currently at war with my wife’s ginger tom cat, but I have hopes for a peaceful resolution!

One album you grew up with that you still listen to today…

Just about anything by Pink Floyd.

An artist you wish you’d seen play live before they died?

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart… the Boss.

Favourite music genre outside of psytrance…

I like to listen to as many different genres as possible… you never know where the next flash of genius might come from.

The track you are proudest of composing…

I have to say my last single ‘Ultra Space’ as each new track brings me one step closer to creating the ultimate tune I hear in my head!

Your go-to hardware or software synth in the studio…

Most of my sounds are not synth based, rather manipulations of organic sounds twisted into something totally synthetic.

But when I do need a synth I love Xfer Records Serum, Sonic Academy Ana 2 or the Access Virus TI Snow for example.

Being on Nano Records means….

Nano represents everything that I have always loved about psychedelic trance culture.

I feel so fortunate to be part of this wonderful, crazy, colourful, inspiring, creative family.

Tell us a bit about your latest release, Ultra Space; What inspired the track, how long it took to complete once you had the idea down and where do you get all that funky groove???

‘Ultra Space’ was one of those tracks that almost wrote itself. Once I had the trippy loop rolling everything else just fell into place very quickly.

I have made some real leaps recently on the production side of things and this has given me tonnes of inspiration to experiment and play with lots of different sounds.

5 Minutes with Zephirus Kane [Interview]

December 12, 2018
nano records, psychedelic, psytrance, zephirus kane

After numerous slamming collaborations with Tristan, Ajja, Dickster, Laughing Buddha, Hujaboy, Sonic Species, Hypnocoustics, Groove Addict, Martian Arts and Audioform, Zephirus Kane has just dropped his debut solo EP, Rise & Amplify and it’s a blockbuster.

An accomplished front of house sound engineer, psytrance forms a special passion for one of our newer Nano artists.

Here’s what he had to  say…

Where did you grow up (city/town)?

I started out in Auckland, New Zealand and then on to London to broaden my education.

Favourite city visited so far…

New York for its energy and pulse.

First festival you ever attended…

I’m not sure which year it was. I was drunk in a pub late one night in London and my mate suddenly announces,  “we’re going to Glastonbury now”.

I didn’t know what or where that was. Four hours later he then told me  in a field in the dark that I had to try and climb over this huge fence to get into this party. I took his advice and it was wicked !!!!

Favourite food when at home?

I like making smoothies.

Do you have any pets?

We just recently adopted a wild crippled cat that arrived at the house in urgent need of food and love.

One album you grew up with that you still listen to today…

Back in Black is still solid today!!!

An artist you wish you’d seen play live before they died?

Hendrix for sure.

Favourite music genre outside of psytrance…

The FUNK…

The track you are proudest of composing…

PURE from the new EP  that we put out on Dec 10th.

Your go-to hardware or software synth in the studio…

Korg MS20, Sequential Pro One, Roland JP8000, Nord 2 – Omnisphere, Sylenth.

Being on Nano records means….

It means being part of a musical family of like-minded artists who share a common concept of rocking dance-floors worldwide. And the pride of releasing my music with psy trance’s number one label.

You have a new EP out this week; Rise & Amplify, two scorching 145 bpm slammers. It’s also your  debut solo EP. Tell us about the EP name, the two tracks and how does it feel to fly solo?

Rise & Amplify invites you to let your spirit soar at maximum volume.

PURE is a squelching, pulsing ride that samples the words of Nick Sand (legendary underground chemist) who I met at Ozora.

VIBRANT is a driving, positive, psychedelic trip to entertain your consciousness. It’s been a long journey to get my pilots license, so flying solo feels amazing!

5 Minutes with POGO [Interview]

October 17, 2018
dj pogo, full-on psytrance, mandala, nano records, psychedelic music, psytrance

5 Minutes with POGO [Interview

POGO returns with a two-track collaboration with Mandala on the EP, ‘A New Language.’

After his mammoth album release in Feb last year called Rock Your Soul, POGO has delivered a consistent series of psychedelic bangers collaborating with multiple artists including, DJAntrix, Sonic Species and Hypnocoustics.

Where did you grow up (city/town)?

I grew up in a little village in Oxfordshire, then moved to London when I was 15.

Favourite city visited so far…

Tricky one… I prefer to be out of cities these days.

First festival you ever attended?

Glastonbury.

Favourite food when at home?

Any food my partner cooks – I’m very lucky 🙂

Do you have any pets?

We currently have three cats – Kali, Ninja & Ginja. they love hanging out in the studio!

One album you grew up with that you still listen to today…

My music tastes have moved on… I rarely listen to any music from my childhood.

An artist you wish you’d seen play live before they died?

I’d like to have watched Jim Morrison fronting The Doors.

Favourite music genre outside of psytrance…

Psy chill.

The track you are proudest of composing…

It’s impossible to pick one – I always get totally involved in whatever project is on the system.

Your go-to hardware or software synth in the studio…

The Virus TI 2 Polar – a great bit of kit for making psytrance.

Being on Nano Records means . . .

Sharing a voyage in sonic alchemy with some of the most talented and lovely people on the planet. Nano is a great platform for getting our music out to the people – they are true believers in the positivity our scene can generate.

You’ve just released A New Language EP…

  1. a) care to share which of the two tracks is your favourite

‘A New Language’ was always meant to be the main focus, but I’ve come to love ‘Time Is A River’ just as much. Very happy with both tracks.

  1. b) how was the collab experience with Mandala?

Working with Angus (Mandala) has been such a joy. He is a true brother in psychedelia, and as such he really has his finger on the creative pulse of the beating cosmic heart. Looking forward to more collabs with him in the future…

5 Minutes with Tongue & Groove [Interview]

September 20, 2018
full-on psytrance, nano records, psychedelic music, psytrance, Tongue & Groove

5 Minutes with Tongue & Groove [Interview]

Tongue & Groove have just dropped their debut album and boy, what a groove it is.

Midnight Madness serves up nine delectable slices of funk, psychedelia and 4-to-the-floor goodness all packaged into a varied selection of house and tech with bubbling psy undertones.

We grilled the crazy duo (Jake and Ric) about the challenges of completing a full album, but more importantly… what cartoon character they’d like to be… 😊

Growing up in (UK) was interesting because…

Free parties, hundreds of sound systems at Glastonbury running 24/7 and the birth of a truly alternative and anarchistic lifestyle.

Half the time you didn’t even know where the DJ was let alone who was playing.

Our favourite movies/books of all time are… (and why)

Jake – Grease – Sandy’s tight trousers, or Danny’s even –/ Bugsy Malone – splurge guns.

Ric – The Blue Brothers – because its fucking amazing.

Ric – Geek Love by Katherine Dunn – beautiful and fucked up

Jake – Jitterbug Perfume – classic  Tom Robbins

If we were cartoon characters we’d be…

Minions

Our weirdest gig experience ever was when…

We once played out of the top of a black London Taxi in the middle of some woods…

Everything was bouncing around so much the poor guy (Billy Nasty) who came on after us playing only vinyl could not play a single record without the needles bouncing all over the place…

Best gig ever played was…

Well hard to admit (ha-ha) ….but, Origin 2018!

Taking over the main stage from Adam (Headroom) was slightly terrifying but was amazing when everyone started locking in and getting their groove on.

What an amazing party and up-for-it dancefloor and incredible [experience] to close such an awesome festival.

The first time we heard psychedelic music was…

Ric – Mine was up the side of a mountain in the Himalayas at the tender age of 18.

Jake – Interesting one, have no real defining moment but having some hippy/rock and roll parents for a solid foundation in counter-culture, it was a colourful childhood!

Still have a one-sided white label promo of Syd Barret’s first  album when he left Pink Floyd given to my mum by him in the height of their love affair.

Best way to keep occupied on flights and in airports is to…

Jake – Sleep, Eat, Sleep, Repeat…

Ric – To see how Tongue & Groove sounds on all the speakers in Dixons.

Favourite track and/or artist of all time is…

Ric –  What a nightmare question, aagh. I can give you a top 100 in no particular order…

Jake –  Too many to even begin…

Completing a full album was…

Jake –  Unreal, especially that moment when we were talking, and both agreed that we had done it. Have we? Yes. Really? Yes….Holy cow! There is an interesting pressure and intensity to doing an album, and this one is our first; you are laying your soul on the line for everybody and you want to do the best you possibly can.

Ric – Really intense. Regan had given us a deadline and most of the tracks were started but trying to get them all ready for public consumption was a whole other story. We really wanted to showcase our sound and all of our different influences and to try to keep it all coherent and sounding like an album and not just a collection of tracks, so there was a lot of revisiting tracks and bringing them up to date with the newer material. God that sounds like it was a massive chore, it wasn’t – it was great getting stuck in the studio for a few months tweaking.

One track you’d love to remix (but know it could never happen)…

We’ve been dreaming of remixing some of the old Technosomy tracks like Pyramid and Electron Bender, but the boys haven’t managed to dig out any of the parts for the best part of a decade now… we’re waiting…

Being part of the NANO artist roster is…

The best thing that has ever happened to us.

Being surround and supported by such a talented and tight crew is incredibly inspiring – apart from them being the best label and artists on the scene they are also our best mates and what a family to be a part of.

Who could ask for anything more?

How long did it take you to complete your debut album, Midnight Madness and what was the toughest challenge in doing so?

It took the best part of a year once we had properly got our heads down.

The hardest part was juggling studio time with family time – we have 5 kids between us, so they take up a massive chunk of our energy.

Now that Midnight Madness is finally released we can…

Keep on doing what we love. Off to the studio – see ya x

5 Minutes with Magik [Interview]

September 18, 2018
Electric Universe, full-on psytrance, Magik, nano records, outside the universe, Outsiders, psychedelic music, psytrance

5 Minutes with Magik [Interview]

Released on 10 September, 4D World by Magik and Outside the Universe (Outsiders & Electric Universe) is a brand new blaster that aptly shows off the signature sounds of three distinctly proficient production outfits.

Also, released this week, 17 September, is a brand-new remix from Magik on our NanOmega 1 EP with the accomplished producer on remix duty as he gives ‘Disorder’ by 3 Of Life a makeover.

We get the lowdown on the man behind the music; his favourite destinations, food and go-to gear in the studio plus more…

Favourite city visited so far?

I’ve seen a lot of beautiful places over the years but if I had to choose the city that has impressed me the most so far it is Tokyo. I was also mesmerised by the beauty of Cape Town.

First festival ever attended?

It was the second edition of Boom Festival. I was still a kid, but it totally blew me away and it’s one of the reasons I do what I do today.

Favourite food when at home?

My recent favourite is veggie cottage pie 🙂 but I like lots of foods. One of the best things in London is the food scene. Plenty of restaurants and food markets with a great assortment of delicious things to try.

Do you have any pets?

No, I don’t own any pets. I spend too much time away from home, it would be difficult.

One album you grew up with that you still listen to today?

Hard to choose just one. I can mention at least 3 I always go back to:

The Doors – L.A. Woman

Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon

Led Zeppelin IV

An Artist you wish you’d seen play live before they died?

Jimi Hendrix

Favourite music genre outside of psytrance?

I like good music regardless of genre.

I grew up listening/playing 60s, 70s rock, then punk rock. I listen to all sorts of music these days.

Acoustic, electronic, old, new . . . if it’s a good piece of music I’ll listen to it.

The track you are proudest of composing?

Hard to tell really.

Every time I finish a track I think the next one is gonna be even better ha-ha. I wrote a lot of different music over the years and every time I close the project I think this is the best, the most I could have achieved at that moment, but I learn a lot with every track . . .

Your go-to hardware or software synth in the studio…

At the moment it’s a Nord Lead A1.

As for the software, still the mighty Sylenth. I don’t use that many synths to be honest, I make a lot of sounds from audio samples, either I record them myself or use sample packs. It’ usually a very complex sound design process.

Being on Nano Records means . . .

Being part of something great!

Nano is a very well organised, constantly evolving label. Regan, Monique and Dala are doing a really good job.

Some of the label artists were a big influence when I was starting, they still are and now we are good buddies 🙂

Very happy to be part of the team.

You latest release came out last week (10 September). Tell us a bit about the new music.

It’s a collaboration track with Outside The Universe (Electric Universe + Outsiders) called ‘4D World.’

It’s a really big tune.

We’ve been playing it for a while now and every time the reaction on the dance floor is nothing short of amazing!!

I have been busy in the studio working on a new solo material, remixes (including the 3 of Life remix just released) and a few more collabs with different people.

A lot of new music will be out soon.

Sonic Species

5 Minutes with Sonic Species [Interview]

August 7, 2018
full-on psytrance, nano records, psychedelic music, psytrance, Sonic Species

5 Minutes with Sonic Species [Interview]

Sonic Species – Smashing the Veil did just that!

It smashed the Beatport veil of Top 10 tracks on Beatport and kept going all the way to number one.

We chatted to Joe about his latest release on Nano records and as always it was a curiously quirky conversation…

Growing up in the South of the country in Kent was interesting because…

“the garden of England” was remarkably interesting because it was the location of some of the most incredible outdoor illegal Psytrance parties on the planet called Liquid Connective. The rest is history.

My favourite movies/book of all time is… (and why)

I don’t really watch movies much.  My favourite book would have to be Lord of the Rings.

If was a cartoon character I’d be…

Sonic The Hedgehog

My weirdest gig experience ever was when…

My weirdest gig was in a silent disco

Best gig I’ve ever played was…

Best gig – Boom Festival 2014  – last day, 4pm

The first time I heard psytrance was…

[The year] 2000-  Lyminge Forest, Kent, Liquid Connective party.

Best way to keep occupied on flights and in airports is to…

Make music but don’t get so into it that you miss your flight.

Favourite psytrance track and/or artist of all time is…

So many favs its impossible to say.

Completing a full album was…

A relief. 😊

One other genre besides psytrance I would consider making…

Future 80s Electro Funk.

Being part of the NANO artist roster is…

Being part of Nano is like finally coming home to a big farm where all your family and mates live in the countryside where the geese roam free and the rivers run deep.

Your latest release, Smashing the Veil, smashed it all the way to No.1 on Beatport. How did that feel and tell us a bit about how the track came about and where?

I wrote Smashing in a day directly after smoking DMT hence the name. I was super happy that it got to number 1 and it gives me real fire to make more original tracks from now on rather than collaborations or remixes.
